We support the Wikipedia!

We support the Wikipedia!
(Group members:Penny, Maggie, Kyra, Millie, Tina)

Our two argeuments are:
1. Wikipedia can make immediate changes and correction.
>The founder of the Wikipedia tells a fact that a team of elites is always behind the Wiki system in order to monitor the Wiki anytime and anyhere. So, everything on Wikipedia is always work in progress.

>There is a great number of volunteers from all over the world who always ready to add evidence, links, proof and reference to issues.

2. The accuracy of Wikipedia is high.
>Wikipedia is more neutral. Because everyone can post what they know or think on the website.

>Encyclopaedia Brittanica may contains some biased  information because Brittanica didn't display its rough draft and everything must be checked by a copy editor.

>Also, there are some unaccepttable and minor errors in Brittanica.

Wikipedia or Encyclopaedia?

I would choose Wikipedia instead of Encyclopaedia.

First, Wikipedia allows everyone to post what we know on the system. It can collect as much information as we can. Take newspaper as an example, we know that an article was written by an editor in most condition. But is it really the truth? Before editors write articles or report news, they need to get information from others. What they write and express are the combination of others' words and information. The system of Wikipedia is like the process of making a news report. It combines information from you and me to make the coverage of the information more extensive and neutral.
So, when we search the Wikipedia, at the same time, we search information from others.

Moreover, everyone can be the editor of Wikipedia. It provides a way for us to express our knowledge.
Proprietary website only allow the owner to edit the information. If other wants to add more details into some issues, they can't find a way to do so. The openness of Wikipedia provides a place for people to debate for issues. With affluent discussion, the quality of the debate could be higher.

I know somebody may doubt the accuracy of information from Wikipedia. They may argue that those providing information to the Wikipedia are non-professional. So, the quality of data from Wikipedia would be very low. Nontheless, most of the active Wikipedian are elites from different aspects. Not only people who have high educated background could provide neutral and accurate comments and informtation. Even Encyclopaedia Britannica itself did errors. Like in 2005, they made some basic mistakes even a 12-year-old boy could correct it. (Schoolboy, 2005). And it is incorrect to think that there is no supervision on Wikipedia. The special characteristic of Wikipedia is that it shows the original draft of the articles. Which is the encyclopaedia don't have.

Discussion: Evaluating the effects of new technologies

1. What are the benefits of the new technologies shown in "Modern Times"?
     Who gains from these technologies?

The invention of the new technologies save manpowe in production. People only need to focus on their own duty, they don't need to move around.
As the new technologies invented, it save time. With the help of the new machines,
everyone has their on position and work. What they need to do is just finish their work as quick as        possible.
I think both the employers and employees gain from these technologies. First, as the need of manpower is reduced. The employer need not employ so many staff. The cost of  production can be reduced. For employees, the invention of machines save their time. The division of labour makes everyone's duty much more clear.

2. What is the effect of these technologies on the main character's life/mood/body?

I think these technologies affecte d the main character badly. As the employer do the same thing and same job again and again. Job become dull and monotonus. The employer even try to use the washroom as a place to rest. We can see how boring and tiring he was. Also, as he kept doing the same movement for the whole working day. His body was out of control. He kept doing the same movement after his work. It seems that he was going crazy. I bet if he make this job as his life career, it would be harmful to his mind and health.

3. What effects does using computers and the internet have on your life/mood/body?

I think the internet affect us quite deeply. For the advantages, of course it helps us to get the most updated news and information easily. We only need to click a few buttons and we can search information from all over the world. Also, we can keep contact with our friends anytime anywhere, such as msn, facebook and skype. The cost is cheap too!
Nevertheless, as the internet provide too many amazing news and entertainment to us. We may easily indulge in it. Like me, when i have examinations, the internet become the biggest enemy to me! Besides, since the information spread so quickly through the internet. Information from the internet may inaccurate. For example, rumours about the death of some Hollywood stars sometimes appear.
